The story of Calon Arang originates from Java and later spread to Bali, where it became an integral part of Balinese cultural heritage. It tells of Calon Arang, a widowed sorceress of immense dark power, and her beautiful daughter, Ratna Manggali. 

Despite her grace and charm, Ratna Manggali remained unmarried—not for lack of suitors, but out of fear of her mother’s formidable reputation. Deeply wounded and consumed by rage, Calon Arang unleashed chaos upon the land, bringing disease and disaster to the kingdom.

Harmony was restored only when Empu Bharadah, a sage of profound wisdom and spiritual strength, confronted Calon Arang. Through knowledge and balance, he dispelled the darkness and returned peace to the kingdom.
