Six countries have confirmed that they will join and showcase their contemporary artworks: Indonesia, United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, United States, and Austria.

The opening event will be held on October 8 at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Bali.

This year, ASI’s theme is contemporary art and the making of its market.

“Through ASI we will create space for modern art at an international level, enhance the communication and cultural understanding among creative people worldwide, and increase creativity and appreciation for contemporary art peformance in Indonesia. We also want to enhance state and institutional partnership using contemporary art performances,” minister Mari Elka Pangestu said on Thursday.

Educational institutions with art departments who have been invited to join the summit are the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Surakarta, Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Padang Panjang, Jakarta Art Institue and Indonesian Art Higher School (STSI) Bandung.

From Oct 12 to 23, the summit offers performances from 14 contemporary art groups. The ministry estimates that 10,000 people will attend the shows.

Among those to perform are Ensamble Reconsil from Austria, SolidState Arco Renz from Germany, Korean National Contemporary Dance Company (KNCDC) from South Korea, Ensamble ConTempo from China and Gandini Juggling from the United Kingdom.

Performers from Indonesia include Teater Tetas, Teater CCL, Suarasama Irwansyah, Vera Siak Dance, Dedek Wahyudi, Oya Yukarya and Dody Satya Ekagustiman, and various groups from art colleges.

Aside from these shows, the summit will feature seminars such as the international seminar in Jakarta State University (UNJ) on October 23 titled Creating Contemporary Arts Market through Festivals, Exploring Public Space for Building Creativity, and Building Apreciation through Educational Systems and Specific Communities.

This is the seventh ASI, with the first one held in 1995. Countries that partook in the past ones include France, India, Argentina, Japan, United States, and Spain.

The festival is now a triennial event and a cultural forum for issues such as multiculturalism, golbalism, cultural industry, and creative economy.

“This years festival is also an agenda to promote Solo and Yogyakarta as the top creative cities in Indonesia,” Mari added.
