Jakarta. Vice President-elect Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday said he was considering a proposal to split the Education Ministry into two, with one part managing primary and secondary schooling, and the other tertiary education.

The proposal was discussed intensively by the transition team formed by President-elect Joko Widodo, Kalla said in Jakarta.

He added that the proposed ministry of universities should also be responsible for research and technology, but did not say if this meant the Research and Technology Ministry would be dissolved.

“Higher education institutions must go hand-in-glove with research,” Kalla said.
